We are totally aware that content such this posted on TikTok, has made everyone’s attention spans shorter than ever before, designing quality graphics that engage your audience isn’t just about making something look good.

It’s about communicating in a way that keeps people interested, curious, and, most importantly, involved. A great design doesn’t yell for attention; it holds it, effortlessly. But how do you do that? Let’s talk about three crucial aspects that can make or break your design—and the pitfalls many of us stumble into along the way.

First, clarity is your best friend. Think about it: have you ever walked into a room full of clutter? It’s overwhelming, right? The same happens when your design has too many elements fighting for attention. Clear hierarchy—the way you organize and prioritize information—is key. Headlines should stand out, subheadings should guide, and the body text should flow naturally. When you’re clear about what you want your audience to see first, second, and third, they’ll follow your lead without feeling lost or fatigued. The danger here is overcomplicating things. Some designers feel the need to overfill their canvas often thinking more is better – we totally disagree. Less really can be more and white space can really ensure you shine.

Second, colour and contrast can work magic if used thoughtfully.

Colours evoke emotions. A well-chosen palette can set the tone for the entire experience, whether it’s vibrant and energetic or calm and sophisticated. Contrast, on the other hand, ensures that important elements stand out. If your call-to-action button blends into the background, chances are it’ll get ignored. Yet, too much contrast—like pairing neon pink with bright green—can be jarring and distracting. The mistake here often comes from not testing how your colours look on different screens or under varying lighting conditions.

Always check, because what looks great on your high-end monitor might be unreadable elsewhere.

Finally, movement and interactivity—when done right—can bring life to your designs. Animation, scrolling effects, or interactive elements can make a user pause and engage. But there’s a fine line. Too much movement can feel chaotic and gimmicky. Have you ever been on a website where things are constantly sliding, bouncing, or popping up? Exhausting. A simple hover effect or a smooth fade-in can be enough to add that touch of dynamism without overwhelming your audience. The common mistake here is assuming that more movement equals more interest. In reality, it’s about purposeful movement—not just movement for the sake of it.

So what about those silly little mistakes or traps that even highly experienced designers fall into? We have worked with many designers and freelancers and one thing we pick up on is that the target audience can slip – you have to trust your gut, but also make decisions based on the target customer. Designing for yourself instead of your users is a trap. Just because you love a particular font or layout doesn’t mean it’s right for your audience. Always test, ask for feedback, and be ready to pivot. Another mistake is ignoring accessibility. If your design isn’t usable by people with visual impairments or other challenges, you’re alienating a significant portion of your audience. Simple fixes like using readable fonts, proper contrast ratios, and descriptive alt text for images go a long way. And finally, inconsistency is a silent killer. If your headings, buttons, or icons follow different styles across a project, it’ll feel disjointed and effectively all over the place. Consistency builds trust and ensures a seamless experience, this often reflects the quality of service or product you’re selling.

Great design isn’t just about how it looks; it’s about how it feels and functions for the people interacting with it. By focusing on clarity, thoughtful colour use, and purposeful interactivity (our Sleeky speciality when it comes to UX) —while avoiding common mistakes—you’re not just creating something visually appealing. You’re crafting an experience that resonates, engages, and leaves an impact. And that’s the kind of design that never gets boring.
