We’re going to be honest with you, it’s pretty difficult in the current climate to not have any form of branding for your business. Even if you haven’t set out to brand your business properly (if you haven’t – we highly recommend that you do!), you probably find yourself leaning towards the same colours/styles/fonts etc without a second thought.

It’s essentially the first thing that your customers see – and weren’t you taught to always leave a good first impression? Carry on reading to read through what branding is and exactly why it’s important for your business’s success!

What Is Branding?

So, what exactly counts as branding?

In simple terms, branding is a name, term, symbol, design and even colour that identifies your products and services as your own.

Take a look at Just Drive. Their strong, bold font tells you that they’re reliable and trustworthy – and their flash of red throughout their brand is impossible to miss. Whether you’re looking at their website or you’ve spotted one of their cars on the road – you know it’s them.

Branding can refer to anything from website design and fonts, to physical objects like this Mr Vikki’s chilli jam jar we designed back in 2021!

Why Is It Important?

Let’s give you something to think about and to put it into context: water. Water is water right? Yes, you can get water from various parts of the world, but at the end of the day, it does the same job. It’s a colourless, odourless (hopefully) liquid and everything on the planet needs it in order to survive and thrive.

If you’re from the UK, we can get this drinkable water straight out of the tap. So isn’t it strange that in 2020, the UK bottled water market was worth £1.6 billion? How can something that we essentially get for free be worth so much in the UK?

Branding. That’s how. And here’s why it works so well for them:

  • The bright hibiscus flower is a giveaway for Fiji water. Their slogan is ‘Earth’s finest water’ and boy does their branding take you there. With their campaign based heavily on lush, vibrant and paradisiacal imagery, it’s hard not to get carried away.
  • The branding for SmartWater is clean and crisp, and funnily enough, clean and crisp is EXACTLY how they describe their water. Their stripped back packaging shows you a product that is what it says it is.
  • Evian leads with ‘evian – water the way nature intended.’ Their logo of the French Alps makes it unmistakeably them, and along with their slogan, pushes their sustainability aspect to the public.

Now we know how it works so well for them – let’s delve in a little deeper and figure out what exactly it is about branding that makes it so important for your business:

People Will Recognise You

As I mentioned earlier, branding is the first thing that your customer sees, and a lot of the time, it’s the thing that sticks with them the most. It only takes about 50 milliseconds for people to form an opinion about you, so trust us when we tell you that when branding matters, it really does. It’s especially helpful if you’re wanting to branch out into advertising. Whether you’re known for your quirky jingle or your font, you want people to make the instant connection that it’s your product that you’re advertising, and not another brand.

The last thing you want to do is to manage all the heavy lifting and convince your customers that they need something – only for them to buy this from another business!

People Will Learn To Trust You

Once you get people to recognise you for your work, you can then make that step into helping them to trust you. When it comes to buying chocolate, you know what you’re going to get when you buy that delicious, magical purple packaging (I know you know exactly who I mean). There isn’t a second thought for quality, because you know it’s going to be there. That’s the sort of trust you want people to have in you and your business – to be able to pick out a product or service that’s yours and instantly have faith.

People Will Be Proud To Work For You

There’s a sense of pride and community in businesses where there is strong branding and ethos. People feel more like a part of the team – and that’s not something to be sniffed at when it comes down to employee satisfaction. Having strong branding and ethos also gives your employees faith that you know exactly where the company is going.
