Websites that make you pause.

Conceiving and building unique websites that stand out from the crowd is an ongoing challenge for web designers and developers. Visual trends can be fickle things, coming and going in the blink of an eye. However, there are some rules of thumb that are relatively timeless, and we can use these as a base upon which we build from in our design process. Whilst many design trends are out the door quicker than others, there have been a number of visual tacts which have emerged over recent years and seem as though they aren’t going anywhere particularly fast.

Whilst it’s important to strive to create websites that have a sense of individualism about them and aren’t simply following the flock so to speak, it’s always a good idea to consider what is “in” at any given time, and to draw inspiration accordingly. Your website is, after all, an absolutely essential aspect of your brand’s image. Many business owners are comfortable with the tried and tested methods of self-promotion through visual design choices, taking great care with their branding when it comes to say, vehicle detailing, for instance. However, to what extent are many of us overlook the importance of setting ourselves apart with the creative choices we make from a visual standpoint with our websites?

So today, we’re going to be considering several standout trends which have been making waves in web design over the last year, and if you’re savvy, you’ll consider taking a few of these design queues on board with your next projects if you’re a designer, or if you’re a business owner considering what direction to take your website in visually.

Storytelling

Storytelling is the tried and tested strategy to create a memorable experience for visitors to your site. Utilising certain colours, shapes and even animated and interactive elements within the design of your website can hugely assist in creating a cohesive and engaging sense of identity for your brand. See this example at audible for a solid example of subtle and effective storytelling through visual queues and design choices.

Bold Typography

Many brands are moving away from more minimal, smaller sized fonts and opting for something bolder and more eye-catching, utilising headers and even body text as a solid opportunity to grab and hold the attention of a visitor. For a good example, see custom coats who opt for a stark, resolute choice of typography that pulls the eye in right at the centre of the page.

Video

Video content is a sure-fire when you’re looking to create a more dynamic, visually engaging website, and can be a stellar option particularly when it comes to storytelling, as discussed above. More and more, however, we’re seeing designers opt for an even more outlandish use of videos, going full screen on their homepages and landing pages. This is no surprise, however, when we consider how effective video can be for increasing your conversions.

So why not go bold and take it full scale when considering how and where to implement videos in the design of your site?
