Sleeky Insights: An Intern’s Experience

Hannah joined the Sleeky team earlier this year through The Kickstart Scheme, a government-funded initiative that aims to get 16 to 24 year olds into work and gives them an opportunity to develop their transferrable skillsets. After completing an MA in Marketing at the University of Sunderland, Hannah spent five months working for Sleeky and developing an understanding of how marketing operates within the web design industry.

Within this chapter of Sleeky Insights, we’ll be asking Hannah to reflect on the time she spent working here as she prepares to move on to a full-time content marketing position at another North East-based business.

What was your role within the Sleeky team?

Hannah: I worked as a digital marketing intern, which was really exciting as the digital aspect of marketing was my favourite module when studying the discipline at university. I wrote content for company clients and for the new Sleeky website, as well as working on a new online magazine and managing social media accounts.


What did you enjoy the most during your time at Sleeky?

Hannah: I definitely thrived within the creative aspects of the job. I enjoyed writing SEO blog posts and copy for a variety of clients, from businesses looking for quirky and fun messaging to those wanting to present a professional and trustworthy brand voice across their website.

What did you learn about yourself during your internship?

Hannah: Even though I was only interning here for five months, I learned a lot about how to communicate with colleagues both online during the Covid Lockdown and face-to-face in an office environment. The team at Sleeky is really supportive and willing to give interns the chance to develop multiple skillsets, so I was able to help out in different areas of the business such as account management, content creation and web design. This gave me a well-rounded experience of the business within a short amount of time. I learned that my lack of confidence can sometimes hold me back, but the responsibilities I was given and the belief that the team had in my abilities helped to boost my self-esteem.

Do you have an idea of what you would like to do in the future?

Hannah: Working at Sleeky has definitely helped me to narrow down the type of marketing job I want to pursue in the future. Before the internship, I didn’t know how to apply my university-based marketing knowledge to a practical role. Now, I have a greater understanding of just how creative you can be within the discipline. Copywriting and content marketing is where my passion lies, and I am very pleased to say that through the Kickstart Scheme and the skills I have learned at Sleeky, I have been offered a full-time content marketing position.
