It’s easy for a website to get lost out there in the vast plains of the internet, Search Engine Optimisation is the process that enables a domain to be more visible to its relevant audience.

Search engines like Google use bots to scour the billions of webpages on the internet for information, storing this information and remembering it based on the users search. This stored data is a huge index of keywords and phrases that are an extension of a particular website, these keywords will be matched to a Google search in order of both relevance and popularity, and shown to a user.

A few key talking points about SEO:

Domain Authority and Traffic

Domain authority is a score given on Moz that shows the effectiveness of your SEO strategy, where you rank in your relevant searches and what keywords are the most common. Check our blog on Domain Authority for more detail.

SEO aims to improve your visibility, which in turn (you would hope) increases your website traffic and makes your internet presence more worthwhile. If you put two and two together already you’ll understand traffic relates to a flow of visitors to your page, the more the merrier in this context.

Keyword Research

SEO isn’t about getting just anyone to your website, because what’s the point in having loads of visitors and none of them actually want to be there? This is where the keywords aspect comes into play, SEO planning starts with putting yourself in your potential customer’s shoes and finding the most common phrases used to find your website, at Sleeky we have “Web Design Newcastle”.

There are three main elements of keyword research, relevance to your brand, authority (Domain), and volume of a specific keyword:

  • Relevance is fairly self-explanatory, we wouldn’t use keywords relating to landlords or swimming pools because we do web design and cool interesting blogs, whilst it may increase traffic of some sort, it’s not what people are looking for in their search.
  • Domain Authority is covered in the other blog, if you haven’t looked already this would be the time to inform yourself!
  • Volume relates to the amount a keyword is actually searched, using a Sleeky example again, we might be rank 1 for Flexible Layout Web Design Gateshead, but it’s a very specific search and won’t be as fruitful as something broader.

Assigning your Keywords

To ensure you optimise your SEO as much as possible, it is important to include your keywords in your web development stages. Here are the important places for keywords:

  • Title
  • URL
  • H1 tag
  • Meta Description Tag
  • Appropriately name your images – The Google bots will see the alt text not the visual!

Its also important to use external links and multi-media on your webpage to keep it regularly updated, You can read all about how a review section in particular can boost your SEO here.

The Wrap Up

SEO is crucial to the success of a website, especially in todays climate with billion of websites it may be hard to appear at the top of the ranks without a strong optimisation strategy. Check out our Sleeky SEO service if you need any help!
