Over the last two years, the way we work has undergone drastic, potentially irreversible, change. As much as we will never praise the pandemic, COVID-19 forced the E-Commerce and online world to develop at an infinitely faster rate.

Many E-Commerce experts believe the lockdowns and restrictions has brought online business forward at least 4-6 years due to people being forced to find online alternatives to their usual hobbies. Much more focus and attention has gone into functional websites, which just so happens to be great for people like us! Anyone involved in the digital industry will have seen a surge in customers and projects since 2020, and those who weren’t established in the online market were desperate to get involved ASAP making the relevant markets more lucrative than ever!

Remote work

Before 2020 you may have heard of Microsoft Teams, Slack, or collaborative software like Google Docs but they weren’t used anywhere near as much as they are today. Companies relied on people being able to conduct effective work from home which required major investment into Remote Working practices. Within 2 months of the pandemic, Zoom’s active user base increased by 151% to 4.84 million in the US alone. At Sleeky, we love Slack and still use it all the time to keep in touch with each other and track our projects, we actually still mostly work from home! A few brief benefits of working from home:

  • A shorter commute (from the bed to the desk)
  • Flexibility of working hours
  • Reduced office expenses
  • A better work-life balance

Digital and E-Commerce

As lockdown became the new normal and customers could no longer go on their shopping trips, businesses and consumers gradually went digital. We would expect by now that most people with sufficient access have at least dabbled in online shopping in the last 2 years, and many may find it more feasible than its face-to-face counterpart. Online shopping is definitely on-trend, giants of the industry like Amazon have found the period especially lucrative, their sales being up 82% when compared to pre-pandemic figures (it’s hard to even imagine what that pay check looks like).

It has to be said, now that the majority of the public is vaccinated and COVID protocols are introduced, in-store spending is roughly back to normal excluding the few stores that were forced to close their doors for good over the closure period. So the growth in E-Commerce and online shopping options does not mean physical shopping is disregarded and is still completely viable, especially in the fashion industry where trying on clothes before purchase can be important to some.

The Wrap Up

We are reluctant to say, but the COVID era has brought great benefit in terms of development to anything Digital based, the likes of Remote Work and E-Commerce have come so far in the last 2 years due to investment and we may have come to an irreversible dependency on some aspects.
